5 Ways to Choose the Best Hemp Seeds

Hemp has been featured in foods, such as soups, internationally throughout history.  Recently, Hemp is hyped as a high protein super food in power bars, smoothies, breads, salads, etc. Hemp seeds feature a nice, nutty taste comparable to sunflower seeds, but softer. The addition of hemp seeds and powder to your daily diet will provide easily absorbed, balanced nutrition. See our other articles on how hemp can be part a healthy diet!

There are many options of hemp seeds from which to choose. Searching through all the hemp seed companies online can be time consuming and confusing. That’s why I did it for you. (You’re welcome!)

What to consider before buying hemp seeds:

1) What kind of hemp seeds do you need?

There are two main kinds of hemp seeds: hulled hemp seeds or hemp hearts and toasted hemp seeds. Hulled hemp seeds are the entire hemp seed, except the outer shell has been removed. Removing their hard outer shell actually makes “hemp hearts” more nutritious by increasing the percentage of protein and essential fatty acids. Toasted hemp seeds are whole hemp seeds, roasted in high temperatures, with a popcorn-like quality.

2)Where were the hemp seeds grown?

Canada is thought to currently offer the best quality edible hemp seeds, due to their superior taste. The Canadian government imposes strict restrictions on Canadian farmers, who are only allowed to use hemp seed varieties listed under Health Canada’s List of Approved Cultivars. All hemp seeds from Canada are non-GMO verified and pesticide free. Search for “Pro-Cert Organic” certifications on the label. Lastly, beware of Chinese hemp now flooding the market. This is not strictly regulated like Canadian farmers. Simply check the label to confirm the hemp seeds are certified from Canada.

3)Which brand offers the cheapest hemp seeds?

Hemp seeds prices seem to be most cost competitive on Amazon.com, ranging from $9-$23 per lb, depending on brand name and the size of the package.

  • Navitas Naturals Organic Raw Hemp Seeds $23.75 per lb.

4) Which brand has the best hemp seeds reviews?

Online reviews can be the best way to choose quality hemp seed brands. Hemp protein brands have an average review of 4.6+, out of 100+ reviews, on Amazon.com. Here is a list of the highest rated hemp protein products on Amazon:

5) What do my friends think are the best hemp seeds?

Reviews are wonderful advice…from strangers. Try asking your family, friends and colleagues what they think are the hemp seeds. These are people’s opinions that you know and trust. Everyone has an opinion…and they’re always willing to give it to you.

These are all important qualities of hemp as part of a balanced diet. It takes time and effort to find the best hemp seed company. But, once you do, you’ll develop a trusted relationship that should last you a lifetime. See our other articles on how hemp can be part a healthy diet.
